6 Better-For-You Summertime Beverages

My boyfriend is right.  There aren't too many summertime country music songs that don't mention cold adult beverages.  Whether you're drinking the blue mountains with Little Big Town, sipping on fire with Florida Georgia Line, or having a little sangria with Blake Shelton, the warm weather certainly brings out the booze.

The warm weather also brings nonalcoholic beverages to the table, like electrolyte replacement drinks, lemonade, and iced teas to help you cool off during a warm day outside.  In fact, just this year Country Time Lemonade came out with new "lemonade starters" which, because of their poor quality nutrition, landed a spot into the #HealthHallOfShame.

No doubt is it ever-so-timely that we talk a little bit about healthier summertime hydration.

Let's all remind ourselves that one of the best beverage choices is water. Plain, ole', trusty water.  Our bodies are made up of more than 60% of it, and it's needed to help carry nutrients and oxygen in the body, help flush waste products, and help us "go" regularly.

But I get that sometimes you want a beverage choice that's not water, be it out of "beverage boredom" and the curiosity for new flavors, or to deliver additional nutrients (besides basic H2O). And I also realize that sometimes you want to nix your soda schedule, but just don't know about healthier liquid alternatives.

So I'm serving up 6 better-for-you summertime beverages.  Trust me, if "healthy" had its own radio station, it'd be playing the music of these 6 drinks and we'd be cruising on a zen-like flavor train all the way to better health.  Take a look, try them out, then come back here and let me know what you think.

Organic Zico Coconut Water | 6 Better-For-You Summertime Beverages | YES! Nutrition, LLC

Coconut Water

It's no surprise that coconut water makes the list for healthy summertime beverages.  I really like this Organic Coconut Water from Zico, since it's ingredients are simple (just organic coconut water).  Plus, coconut water is loaded with potassium, a healthy mineral that gets water where it needs to go - inside your cells - for better (not just more) hydration.

WTRMLN WTR

There's not much more that can sum up summertime than watermelon.  Or maybe there is.  Enter: watermelon water.  Like coconut water, one bottle of WTRMLN WTR gives you you get a healthy dose of potassium.  You'll also receive a bit of L-citrulline, an amino acid that serves as a precursor to arginine (another amino acid that plays a role in nitric oxide production to enable vasodilation and blood flow).  For this reason, though watermelon water may not improve sport performance (1), dietary sources of L-citrulline like watermelon and watermelon water may still be an important component to an overall healthy sports nutrition plan for reaching adequate hydration during the summer months.

Daily Greens Green Thing Half Pint | 6 Better-For-You Summer Beverages | YES! Nutrition, LLC

Daily Greens Half Pint

Chock full of spinach, pineapple, strawberry, banana, apple, lemon, and mint, Daily Green's Green Thing enables hydration AND nutrition at the same time.  One of my favorite parts about this green drink in comparison to others is that because of a smaller portion size, the drink doesn't over deliver on the number carbohydrates at one serving.

Madhava Luscious Lemonade | 6 Better-For-You Summertime Beverages | YES! Nutrition, LLC

Madhava's Luscious Lemonade

I get it.  You want to sip on something sweet, but you don't want a lot of calories.  Enter in the world of drops and fizzes and powders to give you the flavor you desire.  But not so fast - lots of these contain those artificial colors, flavors, and sweeteners.  Madhava's Luscious Lemonade packets, on the other hand, are made with organic agave powder (a lower glycemic index sugar, with no more than 2 grams added per packet), organic lemon flavor, organic lemon juice powder, organic stevia, and turmeric for color (instead of Yellow #5). Yay for more #realfood ingredients!

Suja Lavenade | 6 Better-For-You Summertime Beverages

Suja's Lavenade

Let me sum it up for you simply.  Drinking this "lavenade" is like drinking lemonade while getting a massage while by the pool after an hour-and-a-half-long run on a Tuesday morning.  It's one of those things where you think to yourself "gosh, if I could afford it, I would do this every. single. day."  But then you snap back to reality and decide that you should probably just swap out your Saturday night bar tab for two or three of these babies and a sunset walk. You'd feel way healthier the next morning if you did...go for it!

Brassica Green Tea with Trubroc | 6 Healthy Summer Beverages | YES! Nutrition, LLC

Brassica's Green Tea with trubroc...iced!

I'm la-la-la-loving Brassica's Green Tea with trubroc, steeped, then iced and mixed with the juice of half a lemon.  This refreshing combination is fully of healthy antioxidants and phytochemicals like glucoraphanin (the powerful phytochemical in found in cruciferous vegetables, but to the greatest extent in broccoli) to help support your body's own detoxification pathways for better health.
